Interested in becoming a teacher but don't know where to start?!

Become a substitute with EFC!

  • We provide a diverse urban environment for our staff 

  • Choose your assignments and grade levels to learn more about your interests and strengths in A safe and collaborative environment

  • Weekly covid-19 testing and frequent vaccination clinics

  • We can help you earn a credential (must have a bachelor's with credential).



Eligibility for substitute teaching begins with a Bachelor's degree or higher.

(OR We can work with you to find a degree completion program that's a good fit AND you can join our uncredentialed substitute pool immediately). 

  • Contact one of our career counselors at EFC by emailing and we will put you in contact with the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) to start the 30-day Substitute Permit process.

  • Meet the basic skills requirement:

    • Take the CBEST test,

    • Have passing SAT or ACT scores,

    • Or let us evaluate your transcripts to see if you meet this requirement via coursework. 

  • Apply to the Commission for a 30-day Substitute Permit via ACOE

  • Complete a Guest Educator application with EFC:

  • You will be invited to a short interview via phone with one of our hiring assistants and should you advance, receive a contract to begin subbing. 

  • Choose assignments and grade levels - working with us is flexible around your schedule! 

  • Becoming a Guest Educator can oftentimes lead to full-time teaching positions and/or opportunities to grow your practice and earn a preliminary credential

Paraprofessional and Non-Credentialed Substitutes:


  • High School Diploma (AA or BA  degrees  are preferred, but  not required) 

  • Six Units of Early Childhood Education are preferred but not required
